Belize Waterfall

Belize is located on the northeast coast of Central America on the southernmost portion of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is bounded by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Belize has a 174-mile (280-km) coastline. The name Belize is traditionally believed to have been derived from the Spanish pronunciation of the last name of Peter Wallace, a Scottish buccaneer who may have begun a settlement at the mouth of the Belize River in about 1638. It is also possible that the name evolved from the Mayan word belix (“muddy water”). The southern half of the country is dominated by the Maya Mountains. Along the coast is the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world, which is fringed by dozens of small islands called cayes.
